Beyond the futuristic trends that some expected, the smartphones of the future will not be very different from what we already have. In fact, some of these developments are already knocking at our door to stay. Folding and flexible screens
Folding and flexible screens are one of those advances of the future that seem to be close but have not yet reached the market. And there are many fairs in the sector in which various manufacturers have presented models based on this technology, but for now they do not go beyond being mere prototypes that do not go on sale.
We have the latest proof of these advances in the news presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in its 2019 edition. An event in which models equipped with this type of screens are being the stars of the different presentations of the brands, counting some of them even with price, although without dates of sale.
As a reference, we have the Huawei Mate X, which presents a folding screen, which we can convert into a tablet by simply deploying it, or use it in mobile mode with two separate screens. Its price … nothing less than 2,300 euros, the most expensive mobile of the moment. A technology to which other manufacturers such as TCL are added, which may arrive by 2020, although since what they have today are nothing more than mere prototypes, their launch may be delayed.
The mobile of the future needs data. A hunger for information in which speed is key, especially in a context where streaming video in 4K is likely to be imposed, so there is no time to lose when uploading that video we just recorded or Enjoy any streaming content. In this context, it seems that the capacity of the 4G network is falling short, so the mobile phones of the future are clearly committed to 5G.
However, if we go to the technical characteristics of this technology, it is easy to understand the reason for this change. And it is that the 5G network can multiply by 100 the speed of the current 4G connections, with a data rate that can reach up to 10 Gbps. But if this were not enough, this network is able to reduce latency to just 1 millisecond and support up to 100 connections in a single device. Without forgetting also the reduction of 90% in the consumption of battery by the connection to the network, which is fundamental for the new internet of things.
Precisely this internet of things is what most “pulls” these new networks. We speak not only of the microwave or the refrigerator connected to the network, but of more complex instruments such as future autonomous cars. Controlling these types of devices requires high power connections, high signal coverage and almost total availability. Requirements that currently covers this technology. Now we only have to see how long it will take for telecommunications companies to migrate their networks to this new standard, although knowing their “efficiency”, it is surely a lot.
Artificial Intelligence will be much smarter
Another of the advances that we will see in the best smartphones of the future has to do not so much with the hardware but with the software. And it is that the devices that come will have improved technologies in terms of the use of Artificial Intelligence. An aspect in which the way we interact with our mobiles and how we use them will change.
In this context, attendees will gain much interest, which will now be more versatile, practical and accurate. We will no longer have the current problems when it comes to understanding what we are saying, while incorporating new functions so that the most common tasks can be executed directly with the voice in a comfortable way.
In parallel, these assistants and their new intelligence will also be responsible for being proactive and not mere passive elements as before. Thus, our assistant will be in charge of preventing us from deleting files that we should not delete, that we send messages or make calls at certain hours of the morning or remind us if we have left the door of the house open or the heating set when we are out . Functions in which the current processes of digital connection of the home will also contribute their grain of sand.
More battery and faster charging
To power these ultramodern mobiles, it is necessary that the terminals have enough energy for it. Something that can be a problem, as it is currently for those users who use their smartphones with greater intensity and that in this mobile of the future will also improve.
The problem is that the construction of batteries is not a field in which there is much more room for improvement compared to what we currently have, unless there is a novelty that breaks the trend. In fact, returning to the Mobile World Congress, the folding or flexible screen mobiles that are being presented have batteries of about 4,500 mAh, so it is clear that there is not much space to increase their capacity.
Luckily, manufacturers can work on the other side of the plug: the charging process. The current fast charging technology will be outdated in a short time and will be replaced by a fast charging system that leaves our smartphone completely full of battery in just a few minutes. A process that also adds a prevalence of wireless charging, already present in many mobiles.
But the two most futuristic developments in this segment have to do with the new forms of loading. One of them is solar charging, so it would be enough to leave the phone for a while in the sun so that its battery charges.
We also have the new batteries manufactured by Cotta Powered, which can be charged using the WiFi waves present in the air, while maintaining connectivity. And we cannot forget the models that are loaded with movement or friction. Although these last two aspects will take the longest to reach our terminals, if they arrive one day.
